Karwa Chauth falls on Thursday 29 October 2026, and in Agra the moon is due at 8:13 or 8:18 PM, depending on the calendar. Here are the times for Agra, why the moon can seem late from the street and sooner from a roof, how to plan the evening, and five romantic places in the city to break the fast over dinner.

Karwa Chauth 2026 is on Thursday 29 October. In Agra the moon is due to rise at 8:13 PM by timeanddate.com and 8:18 PM by Drik Panchang, and both are right: they measure moonrise differently. The puja muhurat in Agra is 5:37 to 6:54 PM, and the fast runs from sunrise at 6:26 AM until the moon is seen. From a roof, expect to see it low in the east-north-east at about 8:30 to 8:45 PM.
| What | When |
|---|---|
| Date | Thursday 29 October 2026 |
| Chaturthi tithi | 1:06 AM to 10:09 PM, 29 October |
| Sargi | Before sunrise, 6:26 AM |
| Fast (upvas) | 6:26 AM to 8:18 PM, 13 hours 52 minutes |
| Puja muhurat | 5:37 to 6:54 PM |
| Sunset | 5:37 PM |
| Moonrise | 8:13 PM (timeanddate) or 8:18 PM (Drik Panchang) |
| Where to look | East-north-east, 58° from north |
| First sight over the rooftops | About 8:30 to 8:45 PM |
| The moon | Three days past full, about 84% lit, a day after its closest approach this month |
Why there are two moonrise times
The five minutes between 8:13 and 8:18 PM are a matter of definition, not error. timeanddate.com gives the moment the top edge of the moon clears a flat horizon, allowing for the way the air bends its light; Drik Panchang’s festival time matches the moment the centre of the moon reaches the horizon without that allowance, about five minutes later. Most news sites copy one or the other. In practice, start watching at 8:15 PM.
If a Delhi time has been forwarded on WhatsApp, it is close enough: Delhi’s moon rises one minute earlier than Agra’s on both calendars, at 8:12 or 8:17 PM. The fast is a different matter, because it starts at sunrise, and Agra’s sun rises about five minutes before Delhi’s: 6:26 AM here against 6:31 AM there. Family in other cities will see the moon at other times, about 8:06 PM in Lucknow and 8:28 PM in Jaipur by Drik Panchang.
Why the moon can seem late, and where to see it first
Every year someone in the family is sure the moon is late. It almost never is. Moonrise is calculated for a flat, clear horizon, and at street level Agra does not have one. On Karwa Chauth night the moon also climbs slowly: by our calculation it is about 2.5 degrees above the horizon at 8:30 PM, 5 degrees at 8:45 PM and 8 degrees at 9:00 PM. A three-storey house across a narrow lane can hide it for hours.
That is why Agra goes up to the chhat. From a roof with nothing taller to the east-north-east, the moon usually appears within about half an hour of moonrise. Late-October haze near the horizon can hold it back a few minutes more and turns it orange at first, so look for a soft glow low in the sky before the white disc. With the monsoon long gone, late-October nights in Agra are usually dry, so cloud is unlikely to spoil it; haze is the thing to allow for.
- Find the direction before 8 PM. Open the compass on your phone and face 58 degrees, between north-east and east.
- Go up early. Be on the roof by 8:00 PM with the thali ready, so nobody misses the first sight.
- Expect a big, bright moon. Three days past full and a day after its closest approach this month, it will be about 84% lit.
How to plan the evening
- By 5:30 PM: dressed, with the thali, karwa and sieve ready. Sunset is at 5:37 PM.
- 5:37 to 6:54 PM: the Karwa Chauth puja and the katha, within Agra’s muhurat.
- 8:00 PM: up on the roof, facing east-north-east.
- 8:13 to 8:18 PM: moonrise. On most roofs it clears the haze and the neighbours’ houses by 8:30 to 8:45 PM.
- After the moon: arghya to the moon, a look at your husband through the sieve, and the first sip of water and a sweet from his hand.
- 8:45 or 9:00 PM: dinner. Almost every couple in the city breaks the fast within the same half hour, so tables fill at once: book a time, and pre-order the first course if the restaurant will take it.
Five romantic places in Agra for Karwa Chauth dinner
We looked for three things: a table under the sky once the moon is up, a setting that feels like an occasion, and food that suits a first meal after a day without water, which for most couples means good vegetarian cooking. Hours are as each place or its public listing showed them on 23 October 2026, so check before you go.
1. Altitude Rooftop Lounge, MG Road 2: open sky and a mostly vegetarian menu
Altitude comes first for a Karwa Chauth dinner in the city. It is on MG Road, in town rather than in the hotel belt by the Taj; it stays open the latest of the five, until 11:30 PM, which matters on a night when nobody eats before the moon; and most of its menu is vegetarian. It is on the top floor of Jaipur House, above Domino’s on MG Road 2, and its open terrace looks out over the rooftops of west Agra. Book for 9:00 PM: by then the moon is about 8 degrees up in the east-north-east, so ask for a table facing that way. There is no Taj view from Altitude; on Karwa Chauth, the moon is the view.
The kitchen is on the roof, and 144 of its 183 dishes are vegetarian. The other 39 are chicken, mutton, fish or egg, so if your family keeps a pure-vegetarian table, number 5 below is the one for you. For a gentle first meal there is Tomato Dhaniya Shorba (₹190), Yellow Dal Tadka (₹360), Palak Paneer (₹460) and tandoori roti (₹60), with Gulab Jamun (₹140 for two pieces) as the sweet. That dinner for two, with two soups, four rotis and two fresh lime sodas (₹150 each), comes to ₹1,880 before tax on the October 2026 menu. If you would rather sit indoors, there are 40 seats in an air-conditioned room as well as the 60 on the terrace.

It is open as usual on Karwa Chauth, 1:00 PM to 11:30 PM, with the last kitchen order at 11:00 PM. The terrace is for dinner rather than the puja, so do the moon ritual at home and come up afterwards. Book a table online, which is free and confirms in under a minute, and add a note asking for the open terrace; for a group, call +91 84451 00365.
2. Taj Terrace, Hotel Taj Resorts: an open-air roof by the East Gate
On the roof of Hotel Taj Resorts, near the Taj’s East Gate, Taj Terrace is open-air and poolside, with the Taj Mahal in view. The menu runs across North Indian, Continental and Chinese, and the hotel sells it on candle-light dinners by the pool, with live music.
From this roof the Taj lies to the north-west and the Karwa Chauth moon rises in the east-north-east, so you get both, though not in one frame. Its listing shows it open until 11:00 PM; if you want the candles, ask when you book.
3. Esphahan, The Oberoi Amarvilas: the special-occasion dinner
If Karwa Chauth is also an anniversary, or simply the night to splurge, Esphahan is Agra’s grand dinner: candlelit tables, live traditional music and tandoor-led Mughal cooking, with vegetarian dishes on the menu. It serves dinner from 7:00 to 10:30 PM and is priced as the Oberoi’s flagship, so treat it as a splurge. The hotel asks for smart casual dress and welcomes children above the age of eight.
There are tables indoors and outside. Ask for an alfresco table, though from ground level the moon may not be in sight until later in the evening, and book well ahead, since dinner service ends at 10:30 PM.
4. Infini, Taj Hotel & Convention Centre: a sky lounge with the Taj in view
Infini is the rooftop of the Taj Hotel & Convention Centre on Taj East Gate Road, a poolside sky lounge with the Taj Mahal in view. The hotel lists it as open from noon to 11:00 PM.
It suits a couple who want the moon with a little glamour. If you would rather talk than listen to music, ask what is planned for the evening when you book.
5. Shankara Vegis, Taj Ganj: a pure-vegetarian roof
For couples who want a pure-vegetarian kitchen on this night, Shankara Vegis, near the Taj’s South Gate, is a rooftop restaurant that serves only vegetarian food, with the Taj in view from the roof. It is casual and the least expensive place here. It closes on Fridays, but Karwa Chauth is a Thursday, and its listing shows it open until 10:30 PM.
If these are full, Qairo, on the roof of Howard Plaza The Fern on Fatehabad Road, is an open-air rooftop that stays open until at least midnight.
| Place | Why it suits Karwa Chauth |

| 2. Taj Terrace, Hotel Taj Resorts | An open-air roof with the Taj in view, open until 11:00 PM |
| 3. Esphahan, The Oberoi Amarvilas | Candlelight and live music for a splurge, dinner until 10:30 PM |
| 4. Infini, Taj Hotel & Convention Centre | A rooftop sky lounge with the Taj in view, open until 11:00 PM |
| 5. Shankara Vegis, Taj Ganj | A pure-vegetarian roof with the Taj in view, the least expensive here |
What to eat after the fast
The fast is nirjala, without food or water, and in Agra this year it lasts almost 14 hours, so the first meal deserves a little care. The first sip of water comes from your husband’s hand, then a sweet. After that, nutritionists advise going gently: water or coconut water, then something light such as soup or fruit, then a balanced meal of dal, roti, sabzi and curd, keeping fried food and heavy sweets for later. Traditional homes in Uttar Pradesh serve puri, aloo-matar, kheer or halwa and curd.
If you keep the fast without onion and garlic, say so when you book and ask what the kitchen can make that way.
Karwa Chauth week in Agra
The jewellers feel it first: in the days before, Kinari Bazaar and the lanes around it fill with buyers of payal, the silver anklets, and bichhua, the toe rings. Sargi, the meal before dawn, traditionally comes from the mother-in-law. In Uttar Pradesh, soot feni, fine vermicelli in sweetened milk, is the classic the evening before.
And if you want the Taj by moonlight as well, the ASI’s night viewing runs from 24 to 28 October, ending the night before Karwa Chauth, and tickets go quickly. Our night-viewing guide explains how to book.
