Restaurants near the Taj Mahal: where to eat by gate and by meal

The closest food to the Taj Mahal is in the lanes outside its exit-only South Gate, and the bigger kitchens are along the road to the East Gate. Here is what is open at each gate, from breakfast after sunrise to dinner, with walking times, honest notes on the Taj-view rooftops and a table of places checked open on 22 October 2026.

The closest restaurants to the Taj Mahal are in Taj Ganj, the old lanes outside the South Gate, where cafés such as Joney’s Place, Taj Cafe, Shankara Vegis and Yash Cafe are two to four minutes’ walk from the exit and open from early morning to late evening. From the East Gate, hotel rooftops and The Oberoi Amarvilas are about 11 minutes away on foot, while the West Gate has the least right outside it. For dinner, most visitors move on to the hotel restaurants on Fatehabad Road or across the city.

Every place in the table below was checked as open on its Google Maps listing on 22 October 2026, with the hotel restaurants’ hours taken from the hotels’ own websites the same day. Walking distances are measured from the gates. Small cafés change their hours, so check on the day.

What “near the Taj Mahal” means at each gate

The Taj has three gates, and each one leads to a different place to eat. No polluting vehicle may come within 500 metres of the monument, so cars stop at Shilpgram for the East Gate and at Amrood ka Teela for the West Gate, and battery buses and golf carts cover the rest, as the official do’s and don’ts put it, though the Shilpgram car park itself closed at the end of May 2026 for building work. Near, here, means on foot.

The South Gate: Taj Ganj, on the way out

The South Gate opens straight into Taj Ganj, the old lanes immediately south of the Taj, and they hold the closest food to it. Shivpen Ryouri is at the gate, and Joney’s Place, Shankara Vegis, Taj Cafe, Chia Taj View Cafe and Yash Cafe are all within about 300 metres, around Chowk Kagziyan. They are small places, several with tables on the roof, and most open by 8:00 AM and close between 10:00 and 11:30 PM. Remember that this gate lets you out but not in.

The East Gate: two directions

Come out of the East Gate and you have a choice. A lane runs south from the gate into the same Taj Ganj streets, where Yash Cafe is about 300 metres away. Or follow Taj East Gate Road towards Shilpgram: 25 Hours Hangout Cafe, opposite The Oberoi Amarvilas, is about 600 metres, eight minutes on foot, and the Oberoi’s restaurants, Old England Cafe and the rooftops of Hotel Atulyaa Taj and Hotel Taj Resorts are about 800 to 850 metres, 11 or 12 minutes. Good Vibes Cafe is on Shilpgram Road, about 1.5 km from the gate.

Further out, about 1.8 km from the gate, is the Taj Hotel & Convention Centre, whose all-day Palato serves buffets to hotel guests and walk-in visitors alike; allow 25 minutes on foot, or take an e-rickshaw. Sheroes Hangout, the café run by women who survived acid attacks, and London Coffee Club are in Taj Nagri, about 2 to 2.4 km from the gate.

The West Gate: plan ahead

The West Gate is the main entrance, and it has the least food right outside it, since the approach is the road in from the car park at Amrood ka Teela. The nearest sit-down meal is the small restaurant of Hotel Sidhartha, about 250 metres from the ticket windows, and Joney’s Place, in the Taj Ganj lanes, is about 350 metres, five minutes on foot. So eat before you set out, walk into Taj Ganj, or leave by the South Gate and eat there. If a car is collecting you at the car park, Fatehabad Road is a short drive.

Breakfast near the Taj Mahal after a sunrise visit

The Taj opens 30 minutes before sunrise: about 5:47 AM in mid-October, 6:07 AM in mid-November, 6:29 AM in mid-December and 6:38 AM in mid-January. The Taj Mahal timings guide has the whole year. You cannot eat inside, since the official rules prohibit eating in the Taj and list eatables among the banned items, though a water bottle is allowed. So breakfast comes before or after, and a sunrise visit usually has you back outside between about 8:30 and 9:00 AM.

Joney’s Place opens at 6:00 AM, which from mid-November to February is a little before the gates; otherwise, have something at your hotel before you set out. When you come out, these are serving:

  • By the South Gate: Joney’s Place from 6:00 AM, Yash Cafe from 6:30 AM, Taj Cafe from 7:30 AM and Chia Taj View Cafe from 8:00 AM. Shivpen Ryouri opens between 8:00 and 9:00 AM, depending on the day, and Shankara Vegis at 9:00 AM, except on Fridays. Joney’s is known for its banana lassi.
  • Towards the East Gate: 25 Hours Hangout Cafe from 8:00 AM, except on Fridays, and Good Vibes Cafe from 7:00 AM, on Shilpgram Road. For a full hotel breakfast, Bellevue at The Oberoi Amarvilas and the buffet at Palato both start at 7:00 AM.
  • For serious coffee: London Coffee Club in Taj Nagri opens at 7:15 AM, about 2.4 km from the East Gate.

The counters known for Agra’s own breakfast, bedai with spiced potato and jalebi fresh from the oil, are in the city centre, a drive from the gates, and they are finished by mid-morning. Our top 10 street foods in Agra names them.

Lunch within about 10 minutes of the gates

Lunch near the Taj Mahal is easiest straight out of the South Gate, where everything is within three or four minutes’ walk. In October the afternoon high in Agra is still about 35°C, so the air-conditioned rooms at Taj Cafe and Yash Cafe are the comfortable choice until November, when the roofs come into their own.

  • Joney’s Place: a few tables and a tiny kitchen, with Indian dishes such as malai kofta beside Korean and Japanese ones. Order the banana lassi.
  • Shankara Vegis: vegetarian only, with vegan dishes and a roof terrace facing the Taj; closed on Fridays.
  • Taj Cafe and Yash Cafe: longer menus, Indian with Chinese and Western dishes, in air-conditioned rooms.
  • Shivpen Ryouri: the one at the gate, for when nobody wants to walk another step.

From the East Gate, allow about 10 minutes. 25 Hours Hangout Cafe, opposite The Oberoi Amarvilas, serves freshly cooked Indian and Western food until 8:00 PM and closes on Fridays. Old England Cafe, a cottage-style pizzeria, and Taj Jharokha, the rooftop beside the pool at Hotel Atulyaa Taj, both open at 1:00 PM. Bellevue at the Oberoi serves international and Indian dishes all day at five-star prices, and the hotel recommends booking.

A short ride further, ITC Mughal on Fatehabad Road has three ways to eat lunch: Peshawri, its North-West Frontier restaurant, from 12:30 to 2:45 PM; Taj Bano, a buffet, from 12:30 to 3:00 PM; and Mughal Pavilion, à la carte from 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM. For a vegetarian family, Bikanervala, the vegetarian chain, is opposite the hotel and open from 9:00 AM. The buffets elsewhere, what lunch costs and what to order are in our guide to lunch in Agra.

Rooftop cafés with a Taj view: what you will actually see

A rooftop with a view of the Taj Mahal is the table most people want near the gates, and the view is real, but set your expectations by the distance. The roofs of Taj Ganj, including Chia Taj View Cafe, Shankara Vegis and Taj Cafe, are about 700 metres from the tomb; the hotel rooftops on Taj East Gate Road, Taj Jharokha and Taj Terrace, about 1.1 km; and Infini at the Taj Hotel & Convention Centre, and the roofs of Fatehabad Road, about 2 km.

  • A partial view. From Taj Ganj you see the dome and the tops of the minarets rising behind the great gateway and the roofs in between, water tanks, wires and all, rather than the whole building on its plinth.
  • Haze. Distance and winter haze soften it, and in December and January fog can hide it for a morning. A clear afternoon after rain is the best bet.
  • Light. The Taj is not lit up at night, so after dark it is an outline at most. Come for breakfast or the last hour of daylight.
  • Small roofs. A Taj Ganj terrace may hold a handful of tables up a steep staircase, with no lift and little shade at midday, and monkeys visit some of them, so keep an eye on your plate.

For the closest view with a meal, Chia Taj View Cafe, on the roof of Hotel Shanti Lodge, looks across at the dome with little in the way, and it has a shaded veranda below for the hot hours; Shankara Vegis has a roof terrace too. Near the East Gate, Taj Jharokha is a roof garden beside a pool, open from 1:00 PM, and Hotel Taj Resorts describes Taj Terrace as a rooftop for romantic dining in view of the Taj. Our Taj Mahal photography guide covers the roofs as a place for pictures, and the top 10 rooftop restaurants in Agra has the city’s other roofs.

Dinner near the Taj Mahal, and why most people leave Taj Ganj

The Taj closes 30 minutes before sunset, about 5:19 PM in mid-October and 4:56 PM in mid-November and mid-December, so by dinner time the lanes have emptied and the view that makes a Taj Ganj roof special has gone dark. The cafés there serve until 10:00 to 11:30 PM and suit a simple meal, but the lanes are narrow and cars cannot come up to the gates. So most visitors go where the kitchens are bigger, the dining rooms air-conditioned and a taxi can wait at the door: the hotels of Taj East Gate Road and Fatehabad Road.

  • Esphahan, The Oberoi Amarvilas: the hotel’s Indian speciality restaurant, open for dinner from 7:00 to 10:30 PM, about 850 metres from the East Gate. The Oberoi says non-resident guests are welcome and recommends booking.
  • Taj Terrace and Taj Jharokha: the two hotel rooftops on Taj East Gate Road, both listed until 11:00 PM. On the five nights of night viewing around each full moon, they are about 300 metres from Shilpgram, the official reporting point for night viewing.
  • Palato, Taj Hotel & Convention Centre: buffet dinners until 11:00 PM for hotel guests and walk-in visitors, the hotel says. Its rooftop, Infini, which looks towards the Taj, is open until 11:00 PM too.
  • Peshawri, ITC Mughal: the five-star North-West Frontier dinner on Fatehabad Road, 7:00 to 11:30 PM. ITC takes table requests on its website, and booking ahead is wise.
  • Fatehabad Road’s own restaurants: The Salt Cafe, from noon to 1:00 AM, and Tea’se Me, from noon to 12:30 AM, keep late hours, with music.

Some evenings end further away. Altitude Rooftop Lounge, the rooftop restaurant that publishes this journal, is not near the Taj: it is about 6.5 km away, about 25 minutes by road, on the top floor above MG Road 2 at Jaipur House. It is built for the end of a long day: open every day until 11:30 PM, with the last kitchen order at 11:00 PM, 60 seats on the open terrace and 40 indoors in air conditioning, and an English menu of 235 dishes that marks every one veg, non-veg or egg. There is no Taj view. There is a bar.

Booking a table online is free; tell the driver “MG Road 2, Jaipur House”, where a Domino’s is at street level and a lift goes to the top floor. Coming straight from the Taj in the afternoon? Visitors with a foreign passport get buy one, get one free on all drinks from 1:00 to 7:00 PM, dine-in, and the offers page has the terms.

Is the food near the Taj safe?

It can be, with the care any visitor takes in India: sealed bottled water, food cooked fresh and served hot, busy places that turn their food over quickly, and little ice or raw salad unless you trust the water. Foreign, SAARC and BIMSTEC tickets come with a half-litre bottle of water, the official rules say, and our Taj Mahal ticket guide lists what else the ticket includes. For water, spice, tipping and the service charge in full, see the best restaurants in Agra for foreigners.

The lanes outside the gates also have touts. The UK government’s travel advice for India warns that scammers, pickpockets and ticket touts target foreign nationals in tourist areas. Choose where you will eat before you come out of the gate, and if someone offers to walk you to a better restaurant, or says the one you chose is closed, check its listing yourself and carry on.

Eating near the Taj on a Friday

The Taj Mahal is closed for general viewing every Friday, but Taj Ganj keeps cooking. On 22 October 2026, Joney’s Place, Shivpen Ryouri, Taj Cafe, Chia Taj View Cafe and Yash Cafe all listed their usual hours for Fridays, while Shankara Vegis and 25 Hours Hangout Cafe close that day. With the monument shut, a Taj-view roof is one way to see it; Mehtab Bagh, across the Yamuna, is another. Our guide to Agra on a Friday plans the rest of the day.

Eating near the Taj

The short answers

What visitors ask about restaurants near the Taj Mahal, answered in a line or two, with hours as listed on 22 October 2026. Check on the day.

  • What are the best restaurants near the Taj Mahal?

It depends on the gate and the meal. Out of the South Gate, Joney’s Place, Taj Cafe, Yash Cafe and the vegetarian Shankara Vegis are two to four minutes away in Taj Ganj; from the East Gate, the rooftops of Taj Jharokha and Taj Terrace and The Oberoi Amarvilas are about 11 minutes on foot. For a five-star dinner, book Esphahan at the Oberoi or Peshawri at ITC Mughal.

  • Which restaurant is closest to the Taj Mahal?

Shivpen Ryouri, at the South Gate in Taj Ganj, about 70 metres from the exit, with Joney’s Place, Shankara Vegis and Taj Cafe about 150 to 180 metres away. The South Gate is exit only, so these are the places to eat on your way out.

  • Where can I have breakfast near the Taj Mahal after sunrise?

In Taj Ganj, outside the South Gate: Joney’s Place opens at 6:00 AM, Yash Cafe at 6:30 AM, Taj Cafe at 7:30 AM and Chia Taj View Cafe at 8:00 AM. Near the East Gate, Bellevue at The Oberoi Amarvilas and the buffet at Palato, in the Taj Hotel & Convention Centre, start at 7:00 AM.

  • Is there a rooftop restaurant near the Taj Mahal with a view of it?

Yes. In Taj Ganj, Chia Taj View Cafe and Shankara Vegis have roof terraces about 700 metres from the tomb, and near the East Gate the hotel rooftops Taj Jharokha and Taj Terrace are about 1.1 km away. Expect the dome and minarets over other roofs rather than the whole building, and come in daylight, because the Taj is not lit up at night.

  • Where can I have lunch near the Taj Mahal?

Straight out of the South Gate in Taj Ganj, where Taj Cafe and Yash Cafe have air-conditioned rooms and Shankara Vegis is vegetarian only. From the East Gate, Taj Jharokha and Old England Cafe open at 1:00 PM, about 11 minutes away; for a buffet, try Palato at the Taj Hotel & Convention Centre or Taj Bano at ITC Mughal.

  • Where should I have dinner near the Taj Mahal?

Most visitors leave Taj Ganj after dark for the hotel restaurants: Esphahan at The Oberoi Amarvilas, from 7:00 to 10:30 PM, where non-residents are welcome and booking is recommended, Peshawri at ITC Mughal, from 7:00 to 11:30 PM, or the hotel rooftops near the East Gate. Altitude Rooftop Lounge, about 25 minutes away by road on MG Road 2, is open until 11:30 PM and has no Taj view.

  • Is there a pure vegetarian restaurant near the Taj Mahal?

Yes. Shankara Vegis, in Taj Ganj about two minutes from the South Gate, is vegetarian only, with vegan dishes and a roof terrace, and it closes on Fridays. Bikanervala, the vegetarian chain, is on Fatehabad Road opposite ITC Mughal, about 20 minutes on foot or a short ride.

  • Can you take food into the Taj Mahal?

No. The official rules prohibit eating inside the Taj Mahal and list eatables among the banned items, but a water bottle is allowed, and foreign, SAARC and BIMSTEC tickets include a half-litre bottle. Eat before you go in or after you come out.

  • Are the restaurants near the Taj Mahal open on Fridays?

Most are, even though the Taj itself is closed for general viewing every Friday. Joney’s Place, Taj Cafe, Chia Taj View Cafe, Yash Cafe and Shivpen Ryouri listed their usual Friday hours in October 2026, while Shankara Vegis and 25 Hours Hangout Cafe close on Fridays.
