Couple-friendly cafés in Agra: eight places for a date, by day and after dark
A date in Agra goes best when the place fits the hour: coffee by the Taj in the afternoon, the dome from a roof at sunset, dinner under the city lights after dark. Here are eight places that suit two, in order, with hours, a few prices and a straight answer on candle-light dinners.

The best couple-friendly café in Agra depends on the hour you have. For a date that runs into the evening, Altitude Rooftop Lounge, on the top floor above MG Road 2, gives two people an open terrace, the city lights and a kitchen that takes orders until 11:00 PM. By day, the cafés near the Taj’s East Gate do the coffee, and a roof in Taj Ganj does the sunset.
Couple friendly, here, means what it should: somewhere glad to see two people on a date, with a table they can talk across and nobody hurrying them. The eight below are in the order they suit a date, with hours as listed in October 2026; check before you go. Two facts shape every plan: the Taj is not lit at night, so after dark it is an outline from any roof, and it is shut on Fridays, though the cafés around it stay open.
Couple-friendly cafés in Agra, by the kind of date
Date places in Agra sort themselves by the clock. Start with the kind of date you have in mind.
| The date | Where to go |
|---|---|
| Coffee in the afternoon | London Coffee Club in Taj Nagri, or Old England Cafe from 1:00 PM. On the west side, Altitude’s air-conditioned room and Tea Time Delight for two (₹360). |
| Sunset with the Taj | Mehtab Bagh across the river, until it closes at sunset; the roof of Chia Taj View Cafe in Taj Ganj; or Infini at the Taj Hotel & Convention Centre. |
| Dinner under the sky | Altitude’s terrace for the city lights, until 11:30 PM; Taj Terrace at Hotel Taj Resorts on a full-moon night. |
| Pizza in a pretty room | Old England Cafe, near the East Gate, open until midnight. |
| A birthday surprise | Altitude: choose Birthday when you book for a Brownie with Ice Cream on the house, and bring the cake, with no cakeage. |
| The Taj by moonlight | The ASI’s night viewing, five nights around each full moon (next: 24 to 28 October 2026), with dinner before your slot. |
| A candle-light dinner | A hotel set-up, booked ahead: see the last section. |
| A first date in the city | 3C’s Cafe in Sanjay Place, or a weekday afternoon table at Altitude. |
1. Altitude Rooftop Lounge — the rooftop for couples after dark
Altitude is first because it is built for the whole evening rather than one look at a monument. It is on the top floor above MG Road 2 in Shahganj, in west Agra, and after dark the terrace gives you the city: its lights below and a great deal of sky. There is no Taj view from Altitude, and a date does not need one.
The kitchen is on the roof too, with a tandoor, a wok and a pizza oven, and its 225 dishes, ₹20 to ₹830, are each marked veg, non-veg or egg, so a vegetarian and a meat-eater can share a table easily. It is open every day from 1:00 PM to 11:30 PM, last kitchen order 11:00 PM. When the roof is the wrong idea, in May, June and the monsoon, there are 40 seats indoors in air conditioning, against 60 on the open terrace.
Weekday afternoons are the quiet hours; Friday and Saturday evenings from October to February are the busiest, so book those well ahead (Saturday night in Agra plans the whole evening). Monday to Friday, a table booked online for 1:00 to 6:00 PM gets 30% off what you order before 6:00 PM, with later orders at the regular price; other weekday tables get 20% off, and any day 15%. One offer per bill, none on 31 December, 1 January, major festivals or public holidays; terms on the offers page. The table to have is a weekday one at 5:00 PM: order before six, then stay as the lights come up.
Altitude serves no alcohol. The cold list is long instead, with a Virgin Mojito or a Paan Mojito at ₹160 and a Kala Khatta Virgin at ₹180, and every mocktail is 30% off from 1:00 to 6:00 PM, every day. On the menu in October 2026, a dinner for two of Lahori Paneer Tikka (₹480) to share, Altitude Pahadi Chicken (₹630), two plain naan (₹80 each), two Virgin Mojitos and one Gulab Jamun with Ice Cream (₹180) comes to ₹1,770 before tax; Malai Kofta (₹470) is the vegetarian swap. In the afternoon, Tea Time Delight (₹360) is two hot teas with pakodas, mini samosas, a grill sandwich, fries and cookies.
Book a terrace table online: it is free, confirmed instantly and free to cancel up to two hours before. A lift runs to the top floor, the open parking at the foot of the building fills fastest from 8:00 to 9:00 PM on Fridays and Saturdays, and the bill takes cash, UPI or cards. Tell a driver MG Road 2, Shahganj, the building with Domino’s at street level: about 6.5 km and 25 minutes from the Taj.
There is no nightly DJ and no scheduled live music, though a party booking can bring a DJ until 10:30 PM on the shared floor; if quiet matters, ask when you book. Staying by the East Gate and want to walk to dinner? Most of the places below are closer. For an anniversary, planning an anniversary dinner in Agra covers the hour, the seat and the order, and the anniversaries page has the booking details.

2. Old England Cafe — the pretty one, near the East Gate
Old England Cafe is on the Taj East Gate Road near Shilpgram, about 550 metres from the Taj, and it is done up as an English country cottage, wooden ceiling beams and all. It is not what you expect a short walk from a Mughal tomb, and it is charming anyway, which is most of what a date asks of a room.
It is a pizzeria first: Neapolitan-style pizza and pasta, truffle fries, then a Spanish latte or a cold coffee and the chocolate mud jar, which is the dessert to share. It is open from 1:00 PM to midnight, so it does lunch, dinner and a late coffee rather than breakfast. Mid-range.
Tip: go for dinner, when the lights are on and the sightseeing is done. Open until midnight, it is also the latest table on this list, half an hour past Altitude.
3. Chia Taj View Cafe — chai with the Taj at sunset
Chia is the café on the roof of Hotel Shanti Lodge, in Chowk Kagziyan in Taj Ganj, one of the taller roofs in the lanes, looking across at the dome with little in the way. It is the simplest romantic plan in Agra: two masala chais or cold coffees, a cheese naan to share, and the Taj changing colour as the sun goes down.
Listed hours are 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM, except Wednesdays, when it closes at 10:00 AM. It is mid-range, dearer than the cafés in the lanes below; the view is what the difference buys. Time it for the last hour of daylight: the sun sets a little before 6:00 PM in early October and at about 5:30 PM in November and December.
Tip: for the whole building across the water, the other sunset is Mehtab Bagh, the Mughal garden on the far bank of the Yamuna: ₹25 for Indians and ₹300 for foreign visitors, open every day, and closed at sunset, so arrive with an hour in hand. Both work on a Friday, when the Taj itself is shut; Agra on a Friday has the rest of that day.
4. Infini – The Sky Lounge — the Taj at sundown, dressed up
Infini is the rooftop lounge of the Taj Hotel & Convention Centre on Taj East Gate Road, about a ten-minute walk from the East Gate, and the hotel describes it as rooftop dining with panoramic views of the Taj Mahal, for casual evenings and special moments alike. It is the date for a couple who want a drink with the view: there are the bartenders’ own cocktails, hand-tossed pizzas and a multi-cuisine menu.
It is open from noon to 11:00 PM, and the dress code is smart casual. Book for the hour before sunset and stay as the light goes; after dark the Taj is an outline against the sky.
5. Taj Terrace, Hotel Taj Resorts — dinner on a full-moon night
Hotel Taj Resorts is on Taj East Gate Road near Shilpgram, about 0.5 km from the Taj, and its rooftop restaurant is open sky with the monument in view. It serves dinner only, from 7:00 PM to 11:00 PM, seats 60, and the hotel’s own advice is to come on a full-moon night, which for two people is rather the point.
The menu is Indian, Chinese and Continental, with Mughlai cooking among the hotel’s stated specialities, and there is live music. Ask about drinks when you book.
Tip: Shilpgram is where visitors report for the ASI’s night viewing of the Taj, on five nights a month around the full moon: 24 to 28 October and 22 to 26 November 2026. Tickets are ₹510 for Indian adults and ₹750 for foreign adults, sold online from seven days before, and phones are not allowed in. The official Taj Mahal website has the terms and the night-view guide has the detail; book the table for before or after your slot.
6. London Coffee Club — the coffee date
London Coffee Club is at HIG 52, Taj Nagri Phase 1, on the East Gate side of the Taj, and it is the café for two people with opinions about coffee: pour-over as well as the usual espresso drinks, and an affogato for the afternoon. The food runs all day, from breakfast at any hour to burgers, pizzas, sandwiches and pasta, with a Biscoff cheesecake to split. Mid-range.
It is open from 7:15 AM to 11:45 PM, which makes it the most flexible date on this list: breakfast after a sunrise at the Taj, an hour out of the afternoon heat, or a last coffee after dinner somewhere else.

7. Sheroes Hangout — a daytime date that means something
Sheroes Hangout is a café in Taj Nagri, on the road to the Taj’s East Gate, run by women who survived acid attacks. The first one opened here in 2014, set up by the Chhanv Foundation, and you may be invited to watch a short film about why it exists. It is hard viewing, and it is the point.
It is not a candles-and-roses date, which is why it belongs here: an hour over masala chai, a paneer paratha and a passion fruit iced tea, then the shop of handmade things, gives two people something real to talk about for the rest of the trip. It is open from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM daily. Visitors in 2025 and 2026 describe a menu without prices, paid by donation, so ask at the counter how paying works that day, and ask before you photograph anyone.
8. 3C’s Cafe — a first date in the city
3C’s Cafe is the one on this list away from the Taj: a café in the Deepshikha Building on Wazirpura Road, Sanjay Place, the commercial complex on MG Road. It describes itself as a cute café for handcrafted drinks, snacks and desserts, and that is the brief: shakes, burgers and coffee.
A first date wants neutral ground, a short menu and an easy hour, and this is all three, from 11:30 AM to 11:00 PM. If you live in Agra, or are staying in the city rather than by the Taj, it is the one you can reach without crossing town.
Candle-light dinners in Agra: who sets them up, and what to ask
A candle light dinner in Agra means booking ahead, and two hotels describe one on their own pages. Trident Agra, on Fatehabad Road, says dining set-ups by its pool can be arranged for special occasions; ask whether candles are part of it. The Oberoi Amarvilas describes Esphahan, its Indian restaurant, open from 7:00 to 10:30 PM, as candlelit tables with live traditional music.
Among the romantic restaurants in Agra without a set-up, The Mughal Room at Hotel Clarks Shiraz, on Taj Road, has live ghazals every evening. Altitude does not set up candle-light dinners; on an open roof it allows no candles beyond birthday candles. What it offers instead is the terrace, the city lights and your own decorations, by prior arrangement.
Before you pay for a set-up anywhere, ask:
- The price per couple, and what it covers. The menu, the decoration, any music, and whether a cake or flowers cost extra.
- Whether you need to be staying at the hotel.
- The tax. Restaurants in hotels where a room has sold for more than ₹7,500 a night charge 18% GST, against 5% at most standalone restaurants.
- The weather plan. May and June are hot, the monsoon usually runs from early July to mid-September, and December and January bring fog.
- The timing and the refund. How long the table is yours, and what happens to the money if plans change.
- What you may bring. Flowers, a cake or decorations: agree it before the day, not at the door.
If the evening you have in mind is the terrace and the city lights rather than candles, book a table at Altitude, on a weekday if you can. For the rest of the trip, the top 10 cafés in Agra and the top 10 rooftop restaurants in Agra pick up where this list stops.
