Restaurants near Agra Cantt railway station: where to eat before your train

Just off the morning train with bags and an appetite, or killing the hours before the evening one? Here is what is on the platform at Agra Cantt, what is a short ride away, where to leave the luggage, and how to time a proper meal so the train does not leave without you.

The restaurants near Agra Cantt railway station worth the short ride are in Sadar Bazaar, about 1.5 to 2 km away: a lane of chaat counters, sweet and petha shops, and plain places for a North Indian meal. The station itself has food stalls, a paid IRCTC lounge with buffet meals, and a cloak room for your bags. For a proper sit-down lunch or dinner across town, allow two hours, and leave the table an hour before the train.

A lot of Agra days begin and end here, off a morning train from Delhi and back on an evening one, so the questions are always the same: where to eat, what to do with the bags, and how long to allow for the way back. This page answers them in that order.

It is also Altitude’s journal. We run a rooftop restaurant in Shahganj, about 5 km from the station, and it appears near the end, labelled as ours. Station facilities and train times were checked on 7 October 2026. Facilities move about, so check on the day.

What is at Agra Cantt station itself

With an hour or less, stay put: the easiest food near Agra Cantt railway station is in the station itself. It is a big station, and the paid lounge and a waiting room are on platform 1, the main-entrance side.

  • Food stalls and refreshment counters. Tea, snacks, sealed water and simple plates. Fine for a short wait, not a meal to remember. Which stalls are open changes, so look when you arrive.
  • The IRCTC Executive Lounge. Listed by IRCTC on platform 1, near the second-class waiting room: a seat, Wi-Fi, washrooms and a train display, charged by the hour, with buffet meals and a shower extra. It is booked online in advance; take photo ID and your ticket. IRCTC’s lounge page has the current rates, and it is worth checking the lounge is open before you count on it.
  • Waiting rooms. Plain, and the obvious place to sit with luggage if the lounge is full or shut.
  • Retiring rooms. The railway’s own rooms at the station, booked through IRCTC against a confirmed ticket, by the hour or by the day. Worth it for a gap of half a day or a night, not for an afternoon.
  • Prepaid booths. Fixed-fare taxis and autos from the station. With bags, the easiest way out.

The Agra Cantt cloak room, and what to do with bags

Agra Cantt has a railway cloak room, the left-luggage office, and with a suitcase and a free afternoon it is the most useful thing on the station. Ask railway staff where it is when you arrive: it is easier to find before you need it. The rules are the railway’s, and they are simple.

  • Lock every bag. The cloak room takes only luggage that is locked and properly packed.
  • Take your ticket and photo ID. You will usually be asked for proof of travel.
  • Pay per bag, per day. The rate is set locally, so ask at the counter. Keep the receipt: you need it to collect, and losing it means paperwork.
  • Allow time to collect. Add a quarter of an hour to your return, more before a busy train.

What not to do is take the suitcase to the Taj. The official advice is to leave big bags behind, and Agra Cantt to the Taj Mahal covers the rest of that journey. A wheeled case in Sadar Bazaar’s evening crowd is no fun either.

Restaurants near Agra Cantt railway station: Sadar Bazaar

For good restaurants near Agra Cantt railway station without crossing the city, go to Sadar Bazaar, the market closest to the station: about 1.5 to 2 km by road, five to ten minutes by auto or e-rickshaw, or a 20-minute walk with nothing heavy to carry. Shops open from late morning, and the market is at its busiest in the evening.

The food falls into three kinds.

  • Chaat. The Chaat Gali is a lane of chaat counters: paani ke batashe (gol gappe), bhalla, which is Agra’s fat aloo tikki, and papri chaat, all vegetarian and all made to order. It gets going in the afternoon and is busiest after dark.
  • Sweets and petha. Sweet and petha shops all along the market, two of them Panchhi’s own, according to the firm’s store list. Dry petha and dalmoth, the city’s spiced lentil namkeen, travel well, which makes a box the obvious thing to carry onto the train.
  • Sit-down meals. Plain restaurants for North Indian meals and snacks, and kebabs for anyone who wants meat. Our ten street foods to eat in Agra names the counters we would start with.

Three habits keep a stomach calm for a two-hour train: eat what is cooked hot in front of you, choose the busy counter, and drink sealed water.

Away from the bazaar, the larger hotels nearby have restaurants of their own, and on a hot afternoon an air-conditioned dining room may suit better than a market. Call first to check they take walk-ins.

Vegetarian near the station

Easy. Chaat, sweets and petha are vegetarian by nature. A restaurant with no meat or egg in its kitchen usually says so on the sign, as “pure veg” or “shudh shakahari”; if that matters to you, look for those words rather than a green dot on a menu.

Ours is not one of them. Our kitchen cooks chicken, mutton and eggs as well, and every dish is marked veg, non-veg or egg. Most of the one-plate meals further down are vegetarian.

Things to do near Agra Cantt before your train

If eating is only half the plan, this is what fits the time you have.

  • An hour or less: stay at the station. Tea, the lounge or a waiting room, and no traffic between you and the train.
  • Two hours: Sadar Bazaar for chaat and a box of petha, with leather goods and handicrafts to look at between plates. Bargaining is expected.
  • Three to four hours: Agra Fort, about 5 km away and open from sunrise to sunset every day, Fridays included. Or a long lunch.
  • Five hours or more: the Taj Mahal, which is closed on Fridays. Agra Cantt to the Taj Mahal has every way there and back, and our one-day itinerary the rest of the day.

How long to allow before your train

There is no check-in for an Indian train, but it will not wait either. Be on the platform 20 to 30 minutes before departure, long enough to find your coach without running, and work back from there.

  • From the station’s stalls or the lounge: head for the platform 20 to 30 minutes before.
  • From Sadar Bazaar: leave 45 minutes before the train.
  • From across town, in Shahganj, on MG Road or near the Taj: leave an hour before. About 5 km is 15 minutes or so in clear traffic; the evening rush, a wedding procession or a festival can double it.
  • With a bag in the cloak room: add 15 minutes to any of these.

One more thing to allow for. The evening trains to Delhi usually leave from platforms 2 and 3, not platform 1, so there is a footbridge to cross with your bags. Platforms change, so check the board as you come in.

The evening-train gap: Gatimaan, Vande Bharat, Shatabdi

Three fast trains take day visitors back to Delhi in the evening, and each leaves a gap between the last sight and the platform. This is when to eat, timed for a table about 5 km from the station, in Shahganj or on the Taj side.

Any other train after about 3:00 PMTwo hours before it · one hour before it
A train before about 3:00 PMEat at the station or in Sadar Bazaar; across town is too tight

The times are the Indian Railways timetable as listed in October 2026. An hour at the table is enough for a proper meal. If you have less, order the moment you sit down and ask for the bill when the food arrives.

The Gatimaan does not run on Fridays, and the Taj is closed that day anyway; Agra on a Friday has what to do instead. The Vande Bharat does not run on Mondays.

Getting back to the platform

Leaving the station, the prepaid booth fixes the fare before you get in. Coming back there is no booth, so use a ride-hailing app, which quotes the price when you book, or agree the fare with an auto driver before you sit down. Book the cab while you wait for the bill, not after it.

Ask for the main entrance, on the platform 1 side, where the lounge is. If your bag is in the cloak room, collect it before you look for the platform.

From Agra Cantt railway station to the bus stands

Idgah bus stand, where UPSRTC buses for Fatehpur Sikri leave from, is about a kilometre from Agra Cantt, a short auto ride. If that is your plan, our Fatehpur Sikri day trip has the rest. The ISBT, at Transport Nagar, is about 12 km from the station: take a cab, and allow at least half an hour.

A sit-down meal 5 km away: our rooftop in Shahganj

This is Altitude’s journal, so weigh this accordingly: the restaurant is ours. Altitude is on the top floor above MG Road 2 in Shahganj, about 5 km from the station, or 15 minutes in clear traffic. It is open every day from 1:00 PM to 11:30 PM, with the last kitchen order at 11:00 PM. Lunch starts at 1:00 PM, not before, so off a morning train it is breakfast elsewhere: bedai and jalebi, Agra’s own, is the one to have.

On a train clock, order a one-plate meal: a complete plate for one, and the curry meals come with one butter naan, two butter rotis or steamed rice. On our menu as we write:

  • Dal Makhani Meal, Kadhai Paneer Meal or Chole Meal, ₹380 each.
  • Kulcha with Dal Makhani, ₹380, or Chilli Paneer with Hakka Noodles, ₹410.
  • Chicken Curry Meal, ₹450.
  • Punjabi Chole Bhature, ₹280, or Pav Bhaji Paaji, ₹250.

Pizzas are 12-inch thin crust, baked to order and worth the 25-minute wait, unless the train is not.

There are 40 seats indoors in air conditioning, which is where to be in May, June and the monsoon, and 60 on the open terrace. There is no Taj view, just the city and the sky. We do not serve alcohol; the cold list is mocktails, mojitos, iced teas, lemonades, shakes, frappes and coffee, and every mocktail is 30% off from 1 to 6 PM. Sealed mineral water is charged at MRP, ₹20.

Book a table online: it is free, confirmed instantly, and free to cancel up to two hours before, if the train moves or the day runs long. Booked online for a weekday table between 1:00 and 6:00 PM, the bill is 30% off whatever you order before 6:00 PM; anything ordered after six is at the regular price. Any other weekday booking gets 20%, and any day 15%. One offer per bill, and none on 31 December, 1 January, major festivals or public holidays; the offers page has the terms.

For the Gatimaan, that makes a 3:30 PM weekday lunch 30% off. For the two 9 PM trains, a 7:00 PM weekday dinner gets 20%.

When not to come: for a train before about 3:00 PM, or for breakfast. Staying the night instead? Order from the same kitchen to your hotel. And for lunch elsewhere in the city, start with lunch in Agra.
