How this list was put together
Altitude Rooftop Lounge is No. 1, for the reasons in its entry. The other nine mix Agra’s famous restaurants with useful ones, to cover what visitors ask for: a five-star dinner, Mughlai and frontier cooking, a buffet, kebabs, a vegetarian kitchen, cafés by the Taj and a paratha house.
Each was checked against its own website, its hotel’s page or a public listing in the first week of October 2026; places that could not be confirmed open were left out. After No. 1, the order weighs how much of a meal each gives a visitor against how hard it would be to replace. Hours are as published, so check on the day, and there are no star ratings: they change every week.
1. Altitude Rooftop Lounge — a whole meal for a mixed group, on a roof
Altitude is on the top floor above MG Road 2 in Shahganj, west Agra, with a Domino’s at street level and a lift all the way up. It is No. 1 for the visitor this list is written for: a group that does not agree on dinner. The kitchen is on the roof, with a tandoor, a wok and a pizza oven, and it cooks 225 dishes, ₹20 to ₹830, across North Indian, Mughlai, Chinese, Continental and Italian. Every dish is marked veg, non-veg or egg, and the menu is in English.
So one table can share a Mughlai Mutton Seekh Kabab (₹610), a Lahori Paneer Tikka (₹480), Dal Makhan Wali (₹380), a Margherita Pizza (₹460, 12-inch thin crust, baked to order in about 25 minutes) and Hakka Noodles (₹340), with naan at ₹80. For one person in a hurry, the One Plate Wonders are complete meals from ₹250 to ₹450.
It is open every day from 1:00 PM to 11:30 PM, with the last kitchen order at 11:00 PM, and nothing is served before 1:00 PM. There are 60 seats on the open terrace, the place to be from November to February, and 40 indoors in air conditioning for May, June and the monsoon. Cash, UPI and cards are taken; parking is at the foot of the building.
Booking a table online is free, confirmed instantly and free to cancel up to two hours before. Book in advance for a table between 1:00 and 6:00 PM, Monday to Friday, and everything ordered between 1:00 and 6:00 PM is 30% off; anything ordered after six is billed at the regular price. Other weekday bookings get 20% off and any day 15%; one offer per bill, none on 31 December, 1 January, major festivals or public holidays (the offers page has the terms). Four people sharing the kabab, paneer tikka, dal, pizza and four naans pay ₹2,250 at menu prices; at a weekday-afternoon table, ordered before six, ₹675 comes off.
Shahganj is the first part of Agra on the road in from Fatehpur Sikri, about 34 km away (allow 50 to 60 minutes), and Altitude is about 5.6 km, or 16 minutes, from Akbar’s tomb at Sikandra. Stopping here adds only about 3 km to the drive on into the Taj side of the city.
What it is not: Altitude serves no alcohol, and its cold list runs from mojitos to frappes, with every mocktail 30% off from 1:00 to 6:00 PM. It has no view of the Taj, only the city lights and the sky, and it does not do a buffet. For a driver: Jaipur House, Rana Market, Parshuram Nagar, Shahganj, Agra 282010.

2. Peshawri, ITC Mughal — the five-star frontier dinner
Peshawri, at ITC Mughal, the big hotel on Fatehabad Road in Taj Ganj, is the obvious booking for a formal dinner. ITC’s own page sells it on the cooking of India’s rugged North-West Frontier, and the hotel describes barbecued specialities and freshly baked Indian breads, made in the restaurant’s display kitchen.
It serves lunch from 12:30 PM and dinner from 7:00 to 11:30 PM. Expect five-star hotel prices; none are published. Book ahead rather than hoping for a walk-in table: ITC takes table requests on its website.
Tip: for a drink first, Maikhana, the hotel’s lobby bar, is open until 11:30 PM. For a meal at an odd hour, the hotel’s all-day Mughal Pavilion serves from 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM.
3. Esphahan, The Oberoi Amarvilas — a Mughal dinner with live music
The Oberoi Amarvilas, on Taj East Gate Road, is the hotel whose rooms all look at the Taj, and Esphahan is its Indian speciality restaurant: a tandoor dining room, open for dinner from 7:00 to 10:30 PM, with live traditional music among candlelit tables. The hotel describes the recipes as handed down from the Mughal emperors’ kitchens, served with soft Indian breads.
The hotel’s signature dishes include Dal Esphahan, Kakori kebab, Raan-e-Esphahan and til palak ki shami. Non-residents are welcome and the hotel recommends booking. Its page asks for smart casual dress and welcomes children above the age of eight. Five-star hotel prices, none published.
Tip: with younger children, or for lunch, book Bellevue, the all-day restaurant (7:00 AM to 10:30 PM); the hotel’s restaurant page has both. Mughlai food in Agra explains the cooking.
4. The Mughal Room, Hotel Clarks Shiraz — ghazals every evening
Hotel Clarks Shiraz is at 54 Taj Road, and The Mughal Room is its flagship restaurant: a long multi-cuisine menu under a patterned ceiling hung with star lanterns, with arched windows onto the greenery. It serves from noon to 11:00 PM, so it works for a late lunch as well as dinner, and there are live ghazals, sung Urdu poetry, every evening.
Prices are hotel prices, not published online. The hotel’s dining page also lists The View, a rooftop restaurant over the city from 7:00 to 11:00 PM, and the Mughal Bar, which looks towards the Taj.
Tip: book for after dark if the ghazals are the point; for the roof, ask for The View by name.
5. The Grand Buffet, Jaypee Palace — a buffet with the price on the page
Of the hotel restaurants checked for this list, The Grand Buffet at Jaypee Palace, on Fatehabad Road, is the one that prints its prices. The hotel’s page lists lunch from 12:30 to 3:00 PM at ₹1,600 an adult and ₹900 a child, and dinner from 7:30 to 11:00 PM at ₹2,000 and ₹1,100, all plus taxes, for Indian and Continental soups, salads, mains and desserts.
A buffet suits a big family with mixed tastes and children who want to see the food first. Two adults and two children pay ₹5,000 for lunch, or ₹6,200 for dinner, before tax. With a group, ring the hotel first and ask when the counters close.
Tip: nearer the East Gate, Palato at the Taj Hotel & Convention Centre runs buffets at every meal, 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM, prices unpublished; lunch in Agra compares them.
6. Mama Chicken Mama Franky House — Sadar Bazaar kebabs until midnight
In Sadar Bazaar, the market near Agra Cantt station, Mama Chicken Mama Franky House on Sadar Bazaar Road is known for seekh and galouti kebabs, tandoori chicken and the chicken frankies, rolled wraps, in its name. Its listing gives noon to midnight, which is late by Agra’s standards.

Budget, at street prices. If someone in the group is vegetarian, the Chaat Gali, a lane of chaat counters, is in the same bazaar, so nobody has to choose; the top 10 street foods in Agra names the counters.
Tip: go after dark, when the bazaar is busiest, and ask what a plate costs before the second one arrives.
7. Sheroes Hangout — a café meal that means something
Sheroes Hangout, in Taj Nagri on the East Gate side of the Taj, is a café run by women who survived acid attacks. The first one opened here in 2014, set up by the Chhanv Foundation. The menu is simple: masala chai and a paneer paratha, a passion fruit iced tea, or a home-style plate of dal, rice and sabzi. It is open from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM daily.
Visitors in 2025 and 2026 describe a menu without prices, paid by donation, but the café has changed how it charges before, so ask at the counter how paying works that day. Ask before you photograph anyone. Nine more cafés are in the top 10 cafés in Agra.
8. Joney’s Place — breakfast by the South Gate since 1978
Joney’s Place is a pocket-sized café a few steps from the Taj Mahal’s South Gate in Taj Ganj, run by the same family since 1978. It is listed from 5:00 AM to 10:30 PM, so it is open before a sunrise visit and still open after dark, and it is budget-priced.
The tiny kitchen turns out a long menu. Order the banana lassi it is known for, and the malai kofta at lunchtime, and say how hot you want it: the kitchen will cook mild on request. It also fills the one gap in Altitude’s day, which starts at 1:00 PM.
9. Bikanervala, Fatehabad Road — a vegetarian meal and a box of sweets
Bikanervala is the vegetarian sweets-and-snacks chain, and its Agra page lists two branches: on Fatehabad Road opposite ITC Mughal, in Taj Ganj, and near Tulsi Cinema in Khandari. Each is a sweet shop and a restaurant in one, for a sit-down meal, a quick one or a takeaway.
It is the easy choice for a strictly vegetarian family, and budget-priced. For Jain food, which leaves out onion, garlic and root vegetables, tell the kitchen when you book rather than at the table. The chain’s page does not give hours, so check before you go.
10. Ram Babu Paratha Bhandar — a stuffed paratha in the old city
Ram Babu Paratha Bhandar, at 6/127 Belanganj in the old city, does one thing: parathas stuffed with spiced potato, paneer or mixed vegetables, or the less usual sev and papad, fried in ghee on a wide tawa. Each comes with aloo sabzi, another curry or two, chutney and pickle, which makes one paratha a meal.
Its listing gives 10:30 AM to 10:30 PM, so it is a late breakfast, or lunch after Agra Fort, rather than an early start, and it is budget-priced. Order one each and a second to share only if you are still hungry; they are richer than they look. The sweet shakkar paratha, filled with sugar, is the pudding.
